Sedraya and Umir

Chapter One

Sedraya Lathers

“No, no, no. Please don’t do this to me tonight.”

I started to see smoke coming from under the hood of my car. Luckily, I was near a gas station, so I pulled in before my car shut completely off. I knew this would happen, and I don’t know how many times I told my baby daddy Linx I needed a new car. It was nearly two-thirty in the morning, the gas station was closed, and not a car in sight coming down the street. I was fifteen minutes from my apartment by car and thirty-two minutes by foot, according to my phone. I didn’t have a problem leaving this piece of shit ass car at the gas station and walking home, but not with my six-month-old baby girl who was sleeping in the back seat.

I called Linx over and over, and the nigga wasn’t answering the phone. I sent him a text and he left me on read. I checked his location, and he was at home. Linx wasn’t a heavy sleeper, and the quietest noise or movement woke him up. I couldn’t call roadside assistance because I got rid of my car insurance months ago. Money has been tight lately since my hours at work were cut, so I had to cut corners on a lot of shit. I checked my phone again and saw that Linx had read my text message. I called him again and he still didn’t answer. I tried face timing him and he didn’t pick up. This was so fucked up. I searched for an uber, and no one was available. I didn’t blame anyone for not wanting to come to this side of town at night. Just last week, there was a series of robberies involving pizza delivery drivers and Amazon drivers. Living on the Northside of Houston was like living in the wild jungle.

To make matters worse, winter had come to Texas, and it was nearing thirty degrees. The car was still warm on the inside, but there was only a matter of time before the cold air lowered the temperature. I saw headlights as a white Mercedes on rims passed us by, and I laid on the horn. The car slowed down, and I zipped up my jacket before getting out of the car. The cold air slapped me in my face as I waved the car down. The driver made a U-turn and pulled inside the gas station. I ran up to his window.

“Oh my God, thank you for stopping. My car broke down and I need some help,” I said in between breaths. It was so cold that I could see clouds of condensation coming out of my mouth as I talked.

Whoever the guy was looked around suspiciously. My first thought was that this nigga was about to kill me and take my baby. Aria’s cries caught my attention, and I hightailed it back to my car. I locked all the doors before unbuckling her car seat and taking her out.
